Born in Yonkers, NY in the late seventies, I was raised in Riverdale until the 4th grade when my parents bought a house in a small town just north of the Bronx some like to consider “upstate” (even though it is a mere 15 minute drive to the NYC border). We do have a lawn and quite a few trees, but hey, so does central park! According to my boyfriend, I grew up “where the jackalopes roam free.” The most action our police department sees is breaking up keg parties and the occasional traffic infraction.

Art became an important part of my life in high school when I started taking private lessons to produce a portfolio. My goal was to go to art school, which I attained after spending a few years at a SUNY school where my “recreational” activities took precedence over any studying, and the non-existent art scene was also troubling considering I was one of maybe 3 art majors in the entire university. I was once again the only blue-haired student in school, which drove me mad!

Upon my return to the suburbs, I worked in Manhattan for a semester and applied to art schools, one of which I attended from 1997-2001. I received my B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts and began working as an art teacher at an elementary school in East Harlem. I eventually moved on to teaching middle school in the same neighborhood for another 5 years. I finally left the hood, and after recieving my M.A. from NYU I found myself back in the suburbs teaching art at an independent school.
